WEBSITE MAINTENANCE & MANAGEMENT

Your Website Maintenance & Management
is Serious Business.

Take me to your website maintenance plans!

I don't have time for maintaining my website ... I have a business to run.

A website is not something you can publish online and then let it go. Like most things, maintenance is required on a regular basis. Here are a few things you need to know about managing your own website.

BACK IT UP

Make sure your site is frequently backed up. If you use a managed WordPress type hosting it may be backing up every 24 hours. Find out for sure. If not, install a plugin to backup or manually do so.

Keep a local copy of your backups too. You can’t be too careful or have too many backups.

UPDATE PLUGINS, THEMES, AND WORDPRESS

One of the most important tasks when being your own webmaster is to make all your website updates in a timely manner. Check at least once a week to see if there are any updates.

  • Security updates should be made immediately.
  • Back up your website before making any updates!
  • Schedule non-security updates for low-traffic times.
  • Generally, you should update plugins and themes first and then WordPress.
  • It is best to update one plugin at a time and then test the site for any broken functionality.
  • If there are any problems, restore from your backup.

ENHANCED SECURITY

Every day thousands of websites are compromised by hackers. Many times it is not noticeable to users but can still be harmful to anyone (including yourself) that is viewing the website. Sites have been infected with harmful code that can record keystrokes and steal login credentials or financial information.

You can take preventative measures by using software that protects your website. Sucuri.net is a reputable firm that cleans and protects websites

You can take some precautions yourself by using very secure passwords and login information. Don’t ever have your user name as ‘admin’. That is asking for trouble.

Keeping your plugins, themes, and WordPress updated is critical to your protection too.

SSL CERTIFICATES

SSL Certificates activate the padlock and the https protocol and allow secure connections from a web server to a browser. It is not necessary to have an SSL but it is highly recommended. Google is taking secure sites more seriously now than those that are not.

We've seen positive results, so we're starting to use HTTPS as a ranking signal.

PREMIUM PLUGINS & THEMES

We generally use some plugins on websites we build. Some of these plugins are the premium version and we have paid for them. If we have installed them with our license you can use that till it expires. However, you are entirely responsible for your plugins and the licensing.

A few premium plugins and themes we sometimes use are*:

COMMENTS

Blog posts can sometimes be a target for spam comments. Be sure to delete them before they build up. Monitor and delete any spam any time you are in the content management system of your website.

Even with a great filter spam comments can sneak through. There are three important reasons why you want to avoid them at all costs.

  1. Spam comments can hurt your search engine optimization. Allowing spam comments to stay on your blog will decrease your credibility as a trustworthy website.
  2. Google notices “bad” links. Google can place a penalty on your site. Don’t lose their trust.
  3. Too many spam comments can slow down your website.

If you want to stay with what you know best – running your business – and you do not want to be your own webmaster, Ranking Edge provides website maintenance and management plans starting at only $99 per month. This does not include any hosting, plugins, themes, or additional security.
